VHB steps off the stage.

VHB is taking time out for real life and shutting down the Vancouver Housing Blog for now. I just wanted to thank him for all the work he’s put into his site, and all the analysis and info he’s shared over that time. I wish him the best and hope he comes back to blogging soon should the urge strike.

squidly66 said: vhbs site recieved its 1,000,000 hit on sundaySo maybe that's it. Not many blogs get a million hits in a year or so. Maybe he was contacted by someone who want to help him "generate a profit" from the activity. I hope so – he deserves it!

You can trust him because the number is on the bottom of VHB's blog for all to see.

If VHB is doing/ was doing research of some sort, I think we are all proving interesting subjects… I am entertained by our deliberations to ascertain VHB's gender and reasons for shutting down, the disappearing and reappearing blog… I'm sure VHB is entertained too. Who doesn't love a good mystery!!!I personally thought the PhD/ research angle a little far fetched until I read squidly66' spost re: 1,000,000 visitors. Although how can you trust someone who calls itself squidly?

"I don't know, more questions than answers around here. All I know is that he will be missed and that it will be difficult to pick up the slack. "Yes it will be a void to fill for sure and I think we will all be bouncing around a few of the other blogs for awhile trying to find our personal preferences. VHB seemed to cover all the RE bases and was why his/hers stood out from the pack. Life goes on and maybe the variety will be a good thing in the long run.

"I'm trying not to dwell on the conspiracy theory about VHB but something don't make sense unless it was for medical reasons."I see the medical reason or serious family issues as being the most plausible reasons assuming we trust the VHB.An alternative is that the VHB could be under legal duress from people who dislike what he says and thus he would be unable to tell the truth.Another alternative could be a significant conflict of interest with some job change or project suddenly coming about.Another alternative could be that he started an ran the blog as part of an experiment / research project and now he is finished.I don't know, more questions than answers around here. All I know is that he will be missed and that it will be difficult to pick up the slack.

"It is a wonderful mystery in sad comedic sort of way. Who is the VHB? Where did he come from? Where did he go? Why? " mohican, I'm trying not to dwell on the conspiracy theory about VHB but something don't make sense unless it was for medical reasons. On one hand it's easy to say its a time consuming process and after his Christmas break maybe going back to it made him realize how much time it was taking from his life, totally understandable. On the other hand we are coming into what I believe is the most critical time in this bull market where the cracks are showing and why would he throw in the towel so quickly and without much sentiment expressed towards his daily legion of followers ? Especially after his "vote for me" campaign for Best… Read more »

See if you can spot the difference.pope – that is almost as cryptic as VHB's recent action.I grabbed the archives last night, and I'm glad that I did not tarry on that. I am going to burn them to CD for posterityWhat the heck is with that (new)inaugural post? Vance is messing with our heads.Last night, as I was drifting off to my dreams, it struck me that the whole VHB site was a thesis for a doctorate or such. Doctor of Economics? Doctor of Sociology? Doctor of Psychology?Curiouser and curiouser.I hope that some day, the reality is revealed to us. Talk about… Read more »

I had withdrawal symptoms when he took a few weeks off in December. Now he's gone for good? Say it ain't so!

I agree ulsterman, something smells here, I now suspect he was pressured in some wayHis "TTFN" exit was unexpectedly abrupt and inappropriately glib, but he had been spending a lot of time on the blog and perhaps simply made a quick decision to go "cold turkey" and stop working on it immediately. I've seen similar rapid & extreme transitions when people decide they're focusing too much on one thing. His blog was the first local bear blog and thus immensely influential (not to mention reassuring) to many. However, there are now other people and other blogs to keep the discussion and analysis going.

Did anyone catch the 5:00 early news on Global? One of the top stories, or should I say shameless advertisement masquerading as news, was about a condo development in Surrey called Quattro Living.I saw that crap too; couldn't believe they were leading with a virtual advertisement for the developer. Farking criminal. While I'm not prone to 'tinfoil hat' theories, I seriously wonder if someone wasn't pressured and/or paid off to air it as a counter to CTV's Chris Olsen's piece a few days before.

Time to mythologize VHB. He knew exactly what he was doing. To continue would only diminish the growth of us-his humble mentees. We have been pushed out of the nest. Already I feel a huge responsibility to continue his message- balanced anlysis of the facts and counterpoint to MSM.( And this from a 50 something father of four.)

"I understand that VHB needed to take a break, but there's more to the story… Nobody puts that much dedictation into something and then quits with a final posting that looks like he wrote it while his house was burning down.It was quite the miserable day for bear blogs. I noticed that the British Columbia House Blog blogger is quitting too – he bought a house! Oh the irony! "I agree ulsterman, something smells here, I now suspect he was pressured in some way. I would have expected a bit of a warning if it was becoming overwhelming, unless it was for medical reasons, then one would think he would have said it to make people understand the abrupt departure.

The hole left in the local real estate blogosphere will be huge no doubt. Thanks for everything VHB. However, the other local bloggers aren't exactly slouches and I have faith the slack will be picked up. Not surprisingly, there are still plenty of things to talk about… Did anyone catch the 5:00 early news on Global? One of the top stories, or should I say shameless advertisement masquerading as news, was about a condo development in Surrey called Quattro Living. Some of the story was about urban renewal in Surrey, but mostly it looked like product placement orchestrated by Global, Surrey city council and the developer. Deborra Hope finished the story with a spiel on how prices start in the low 100s for a one bedroom with square footage of blah blah blah up to blah blah blah. If I… Read more »

I am definitely good with the cross-posting idea.I am also willing to contribute in the data analysis department and try to pick up where VHB left off once he posts his data on googlepages.

I'm already having withdrawal symptoms.rentah said: We need a venue for discussion 'in the spirit of VHB'. The surviving blogs (condo, unreal, langley) are all indispensible and have their own character, but they don't fill that niche. RET definitely isn't the spot. Agreed as well. I suggested in the comments at Mohican's site that perhaps a group blog with multiple admins/authors would fit the bill. Sharing the effort would make it easier on everyone and Pope, Mohican, (un)real and others could cross-post both at their site and the new one. This frees them from keeping a housing-only focus. But if someone wants to take the ball and run with it then that would be great… Read more »

Geez. I can't believe this. VHB was part of my morning routine, I miss his posting already and its only been one day. I hope he's ok.He's stated that he didn't buy, and it seems to me that he's the sort of person that would just come out and say that he found the right place for the right price if that was what happened.I hope that the community that VHB pulled together will continue to post on the local boards, but I'll miss VHB's point of view.

Rentah: The only way you'll get another Van Housing blog is with another VHB. I'm happy to run a monday topic and friday rain barrel here so everyone can weigh in, but I don't have VHB's knack with the data.Anyone with a suggested monday topic can email me at vancouvercondo.info@gmail.comJim: I agree. Though the abrupt leaving message seems a bit strange, the nice thing about a hobby is if you need or want to you can end it abruptly. Just because he's provided us with so much info doesn't mean we have any right to information about his personal situation.
