Who owns your ‘winter’ in ‘2010′?

In order to protect our economy from an invasion of parasitic small family-owned businesses hitching a free ride on the Olympics ‘brand’, Industry minister Maxime Bernier has introduced bill C-47 which grants Vancouver Olympic organizers ownership over public use of exotic words like winter, gold, silver, bronze, sponsor, Vancouver, Whistler, 2010, tenth, medals, and games.
So if you had plans to run a seniors hockey tournament in 2010 and branding it ‘the Vancouver 2010 silver winter games‘, just don’t. ok?
Just to be safe, refrain from using any of the words listed above until 2011 and you should be ok. The last thing we want to do is infringe upon the fragile rights of the I.O.C.

Pope, the Olympic organizers own the province. They paid a fee for it. End of story.
Through proper and legal tax planning, not much of my money will be going to subsidize the millionaire’s trust accounts.

The debacle down south doesn’t even seem to register. Either we are immune, or the eventual wakeup call be ruder.

This is going to end VERY VERY BADLY. Even worse than I thought before. I don’t know if I want to stick around to see it. So many other places to live in BC, Canada or even the World.
Toronto prices are now only 2/3rds of Vancouver prices and pay is better. Feeling urge to leave again.

It’s different here; we have the Olympics; every boomer and third-worlder wants to live here; Jupiter is aligned with Mars…yaddah yaddah yaddah.
Everyone here seems blissfully unaware of the sub-prime meltdown in the US. People are aware of the market correction and point fingers at China, but fail to see how weakness in the lending market contributed to a continuing downturn through Friday. Some lenders were down 20-25% in after-hours trading on Friday; Monday should be interesting.
More to the point, even fewer are considering the effects of a lender meltdown. However, I just watched CNN and was surprised to see them state bluntly that the housing market is effectively toast. They provided solid reasons - i.e. subprime broken; tightening credit in sub, alt, and prime.
But then they suggested that the housing market could come back at the end of the year, though reasons were never provided (other than the implicit intent to avert panic).
I suspect, however, that even here in Olympic Fantasy Land more will be aware by the end of this week that Goldilocks just got mauled.

Why shouldn’t the IOC do everything in their power to protect their brand?

..what you mean like last week? That was a figment of my imagination?
I don’t have a problem with the IOC enforcing their brand, but why the hell do we need new laws to protect them and give them ownership over common words like ‘winter’ and ’sponsor’?
