Regular readers probably noticed that this site was gone yesterday.  Well, we’re back for now.  We had a flood of connections that overwhelmed the server and a potential issue with the comment rating script.  For now I’ve had to disable the rating feature and I’ve blocked connections from an IP that was doing most of the flooding.  If you’re connecting from cipherkey and not intentionally flooding the site, get in touch and we’ll work out the issue.  You’ll know if your IP has been blocked because instead of seeing this site you’ll see this.

And for the rest of you, welcome back!

I wouldn't say BC is far less dependent on RE and consumer spending than now. BC's history has been dependent of some sort to immigration, even as early as in the 1900s. People like the weather in BC and what you are hearing today (BC is a great place to stay) is the same rhetoric you heard in the 70s, 80s as well as the 1900s. It was once an export economy, but today like any country who suffered from this credit crisis, we are NOT manufacturing things like we used to. BC's real estate boom and the bust history is quite fascinating. Go and visit the Vancouver Museum sometime and peruse their Vancouver history section and you'll see that RE boom and bust in BC can be traced back to the 1900s, especially in 1907 and 1913. A real estate advertisement telling people to buy homes with "easy" credit"! Well yes, anyone can afford a home — that's in the 1900s! One lady bought a house for around $1723 and sold it for around $17250 a few years later before the crash (can't remember the exact figures but close). Is it shocking to see home prices today went up so high? When the 1913 crash came, BC home prices did not rise to its former glory until the 1950s! I just said that the games were internationally unpopular ( virtually unknown for the most part) but BCTV news just reported that there is also a derth of interest amongst locals to volunteer. Bwahahhahahahahahaa ! When they first started out the Olympic committee's were 'screening ' people as if the person who was attempting to sign up wasn't up to their high standars. Now, they begging for volunteers and will take anyone who'll show up. I know they had to redraw the opening ceremony dance number because the call for 3500 dancers wasn't answered. No one showed up. Bwhahahahahaha. Apparently the Ballet companies were busy and the applicants who were first rejected weren't going to grovel. The 'volunteers' manning the gates apparently are all government paid emplyees hidden behind a 'workshare' program subsidized by the taxpayer. Why don't they just… Read more »

NO -LYMPICS: First, WTF is a crown corporation doing sponsoring an Olympics. Isn't that double taxation. Wasn't the original mandate of ICBC to be 'revenue neutral' to the public? Why isn't the taxpayer getting those dollars back in lower premiums instead of blowing it on sponsorships? The idea of a corpoaration sponsoring an event like this is to advertise its services so as to make money through the advertisind spinoffs. ICBC is a fucking monoploy which already has 100% of the market it is mandated by legislation to service. Is ICBC a 'world class' corporation all of a sudden? This is outrageous waste of the taxpayers dollars !!!!!! Shame beyond shame. I see that BC hydro is also an OLympic cash cow. BC Hydro just announced that they will increase utilities charges 11% next year for all applications. Fucking unbelievable… Read more »

ICBC is an "official supporter" of the Olympics, with a $15-million sponsorship deal with 2010. The deal makes ICBC the insurer for 4,500 vehicles needed for the 2010 fleet before and during the Games. VANOC was forced to buy $40-million worth of outdoor advertising from billboard companies, but is so far around $12-million short in reselling the space. VANOC has sold only about a third of its 75 VIP corporate hospitality packages, worth $285,000 each.
