Vancouver no longer on planet earth?

The Condo King has emerged from hibernation and seen no shadow: that means two more years of bubble.

“We no longer live in Vancouver. We live on the planet.”

With that remark, renowned Vancouver realtor Bob Rennie attempted to explain the evolution of this city’s exasperating housing market.

He made the comment last week to a conference of the Urban Land Institute, an organization representing realtors and developers who intimately understand what the condo guru was referring to.

Good luck with your LNG fantasies, lady.

Rennie made the speech to the Urban Development Institute, not the Urban Land Institute. Two different organizations

The UDI is a local group well known for being a lobby group for developers.

ULI is an international non-profit that includes developers, but also a broader range of people involved in urban planning issues; academics, architects, engineers, civil servants, researchers, etc.

What he meant to say was:
We no longer live in Vancouver. We live in Asia.

What Rennie wanted you to think was, there is no asset bubble, buy now before you get priced out by the asians

“in the history of vancouver nobody famous has ever lived in vancouver or ever will….”

Jimi Hendrix. Well he wasn’t famous yet, but I think he still counts.

Plus lots of people like Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, but that’s second tier. 🙂

re: “We no longer live in Vancouver. We live on the planet.”

You should all know that Vancouver has been in Heaven all this time, which we all know is not on Earth.

Of course, this may lead you to ask why the slogan we keep hearing for B.C. is “Best Place on Earth”. But you mustn’t pay attention to such obvious logical inconsistencies. Such inconsistencies have put there on purpose to test your faith!

Indeed it is not our place is not to question, as we are mere sheep that must only believe what we are told. After all, the real estate Gods work in mysterious ways..

Van West Delusional listing:
5988 NEWTON WD, University, Vancouver West, $8,990,000.00.
Assessed just above $4 million, mainly for the land.

The property has been on the market for a few months. Now the new realtor (or the owner?) did not put up a sale sign.

Best place for a corrupted foreign official to hide his wealth, so I would guess it will soon be taken by one such.

But there are the famous who have died in Vancouver. Errol Flynn passed away in an apartment on Burnaby St in the West End, parting with his 17 year old girlfriend, back in 1959. Van’s been world class a long time.

imo, The China/Russia deal is the most significant geo-economic-political event since FDR took the USA off the gold standard in 1933

This is a post by Aggregator on GT’s blog. Very relevant. —————– Thankfully, there are some honest high-level real estate professionals that were warning about the future of Vancouver’s real estate market, like William McCarthy, who wrote a report in 2011 titled The Impact and Consequences to Date of Asian Investment in Metro Vancouver’s Real Estate Market (PDF), where he noted the following keypoints: This rapid and unplanned rise of Asian investment in Metro Vancouver has led to, contributed to, and greatly accelerated the following: – A virtual destruction of traditional housing affordability models. By the second quarter of 2011 the average price of a detached home in Vancouver was $843,300 (which would currently purchase only a modest residence). To fund this average residence now requires an impossible 95.5 percent of household income. Canada’s largest bank now raises the possibility… Read more »

vancouver is a chinese city. i think we need to start considering chinese values in decisions that effect our institutions.

School transgender policy angers Vancouver’s Chinese Christians

“I think this goes to Chinese family values,” said Chang on Monday. “Many [opponents of the plan] are Christian, but many are not, and so this is about family values, and the ability of parents to parent their children and not have that disturbed by the school system. The only reason more Caucasian parents haven’t been involved is because they haven’t even heard about it. The word has gotten out in the Chinese community faster because those were people at the forefront.”

“We live on the planet.”

Rennie never specified which planet he lives on.

Possibly Planet Clueless in the far reaches of the Metrosexual System.

i don’t know what it means. do you?

why don’t you go ahead and assume you know exactly what it means and then create an argument that attacks that assumption.

@12: “The China/Russia deal is the most significant geo-economic-political event since FDR took the USA off the gold standard in 1933”

That’s a joke, right?

Putting aside WWII and all of the global economic and political shifts that followed it, and just looking at Russia-China, it’s not as significant as the Soviet-China alliance following Mao taking power, and the Soviet-China rupture after Stalin’s death.

And it’s just a blip compared to the economic reforms in China that took place after Mao’s death, which I (and a lot of people) consider the biggest geo-economic-political event of more recent times.

@#14 I went to the VSB meeting that discussed the transgender policy and can comment. Cheryl Chang is WRONG to say CAUCASIAN parents are not against this. She should state CHINESE parents are against this, CANADIAN parents are not. The opposition audience was primarily Chinese, and judging by their English proficiency, first generation. So yes we have to CONSIDER they still have Chinese values, yet it doesn’t mean we should ACCEPT that. They need to adopt CANADIAN values, and that means acceptance, not control. Lets be very clear why they are in opposition. They want full control over what their kids do, a typical Chinese value that isn’t reflected in Canadian culture. They do not like the policy that the school will support their child in whatever choice the child makes, and respect the child’s right to privacy. What is… Read more »

No. A male wishing to identify as female would have to make that clear to school officials, so a simple bait and switch technique wouldn’t work.

Even the Chinese Christians don’t stoop that low.

it seems that the majority of people in vancouver schools are chinese. maybe you should start learning mandarin and work towards creating a harmonious society rather than trying to cause problems.
