Jennifer Fox: Goodbye Vancouver

Sure, I managed to pay rent on a 380-square-foot apartment and eat takeout sushi once in while, but I definitely haven’t saved for retirement or been able to afford to give birth yet. I’ve spent most of my 30s on the west coast (land of economic opportunities?) while I watched my friends on the east coast (with less education than me) buy four -bedroom houses and multiple cars.

Whiner….as been said by bears on this blog repeatedly, having children is NOT a right. And really, if renting a sub-400 studio and eating take out sushi kills your budget then you really aren’t that smart / successful and need to make rethink your career choices or just face up to the fact that maybe, just maybe despite all your “higher” education, you just aren’t as good as your less educated friends.

I don’t recall bears on this forum saying that, and as a matter of fact it IS a right.

Or were you talking about your favourite country rather than Canada?

plenty of bears have blasted people on welfare or low income with lots of kids, generally along the lines of if you can’t afford kid then you should have any. Same with people who complain about unable to have kids due to high house prices.

In fact, I argue that having children is a fundamental human right and should not be determined by money but many bears disagrees.

Beijing’s Long Game in the Oil Sands

On October 20th, 2015, Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau received a congratulatory call from China’s ambassador Luo Zhaohui. The next day, the state-run China Daily newspaper celebrated “improved prospects for a Free Trade Agreement with China” under Canada’s new Liberal government. A week later Premier Li Keqiang himself picked up the phone.

China’s second-in-command formally invited Trudeau to Beijing for a state visit and trade talks. Next, a visiting Chinese trade official spoke of a “rare historical opportunity” to open up greater access to Canada’s energy resources. As Vice-Minister Han Jun explained, that means lifting restrictions on China’s state-owned oil companies and getting a pipeline built to the West Coast.

From the US:

“Robert Shiller: We’re not in a housing bubble… yet”, Yahoo Finance w Video

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/shiller–we-re-not-a-housing-bubble–yet-164129807.html

“Home values in 20 U.S. cities are still climbing as a tight supply helps push prices higher.”

““The price climb has been pretty steady since 2012. In a lot of cities, prices are up over 30%.”

patriotz

Case-Shiller 20 is still down about 10% in nominal terms form the peak in 2006. If you assume 2% annual inflation over the decade that’s down about 30% in real terms.

Note that in many cities where prices have gone up a lot from the bottom so have rents, e.g. San Francisco.

Remember that.” reminds me of how patriotz slowly changed his position on HAM after steering people wrong for a decade. remember patriotz’s buddy jesse who quit the blog because he thought HAM discussions were racist? are these two wolves in bear clothing? i’ve said the market is going to go up and i’ve said that HAM is the reason. i’ve said that sinofication is real. i’ve brought all this to people’s attention despite benefiting from prices going up. am i a selfless saint? no. i know that vancouverites ultimately don’t want to stop the sinofication… Read more »

“Canada due for debt crisis and recession, economist argues”, CBC News http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-debt-crisis-forbes-1.3510581 “An economist writing for Forbes magazine has tapped Canada as one of seven countries in the world that are due for a debt crisis and an ensuing recession in the next one to three years. The trigger will be too much credit, with companies and individuals discouraged from borrowing because their debt is too high and banks then balk at lending, said Steve Keen, head of the school of economics, politics and history at Kingston University London. ” “Government stimulus programs and programs to support first-time home buyers can postpone the pain, he argues, but credit cannot keep growing at such a rapid rate, unless GDP is growing more rapidly.” “”When it arrives, these countries — many of which appeared to avoid the worst of the crisis in… Read more »

China clamps down on foreign place names to preserve ‘national dignity’

China says it will clamp down on foreign-sounding and “bizarre” names after too many streets and developments called “Manhattan” or “Venice” have popped up amid decades of frenzied building…

Its common in Chinese cities to encounter words like “elite” or “chateau” in the names of shopping malls or housing compounds. In Beijing, there is a “Central Park” condominium compound while another upscale project goes by the impressive title of “Yuppie International Condos.”

Pricey meetings with premier helping fuel B.C. Liberal fundraising machine

Bob Rennie, chair of fundraising for the B.C. Liberals, estimated that between now and the election next May, the party might organize 20 or more of the type of small, intimate gatherings at which people can pay big money to get special access to Ms. Clark. Far from having a difficult time raising money for his friend, Mr. Rennie confirmed that he has helped raise nearly $5-million since he took over as her chief party fundraiser four years ago.
