Seems like you Caucasians are so out of touch with the skyrocketing rental prices. One guy started talking about immigration but backtracked when confronted. Hahaha.
The bigger issue not being mentioned is the people living in Vancouver proper are going to. E priced out of rentals within a few years as foreign students and 10 yr visa holders take their place.

Appearing to have your lunch fed to you by media which is repeatedly pointing out flaws in the system you’re supposed to be tending 1) makes it look like you’re weak on that file and 2) invites all kinds of speculation on why the problems exist in the first place. I don’t doubt that the BC Liberals are in full electioneering mode and want to appear busy on this file, but the motives for their inaction on these topics without reporting is obvious (soooo many vested interests) and there are many other ways to appear to be doing something on real estate without waiting for the media to point out your problems. Some of Tomlinson’s reporting earlier this year directly challenged many of the public assertions about BC real estate markets from this government and made them look very inept and foolish. Every time one of these articles drops, the perception that the government is inept on this file appears to be reinforced. Yes, the government was surely aware. These loopholes benefit their biggest donors, their personal real estate holdings, and let them prop up their fake economy a bit more. The government only takes action after the reporting because of the presence of the spotlight on one of the many ways they’re lining the pockets of their paymasters. I think it’s just a firebug. There is too little upside and too much downside to torching your own property. Insurance will pay only to rebuild and won’t pay anything if they think the owner was in on it (criminal conviction not required). And I think site cleanup cost would be comparable to a demo. But they have a suspect so let’s see.

I think with all that is being done and said re. vacant housing, corrupt foreign investors and even the change in political landscape south of the border (and perhaps here too) some have taken it upon themselves to make a statement. there will be a day when lamborghinis, ferraris and other uber expensive cars get targeted next.
I agree, Welsh nationalist used to burn down holiday homes owned by absentee English people because they claimed wealthy southerners were driving the price of homes beyond the reach of locals. Although i don’t agree with the method, I do respect their activism.
