Everybody knows that real estate is the perfect investment, but how many of you are investing in cemetery land? After all they aren’t making any more of it.

As cemeteries run out of space, cities are scrambling to find new land for burials or maximize the land they already have, while some residents are seeking cheaper plots in the suburbs. Familiar housing terms like affordability and density are beginning to have meaning in both life and death.

“We are at, or soon to be at, a crisis in cemetery space,” said Vancouver landscape architect Erik Lees, whose company, Lees & Associates, plans cemeteries across North America. “The Lower Mainland is likely the poorest-served region of all the major cities in Canada.”

Some of the same factors that have driven up the price of housing in B.C. — including geography, zoning and population — have also led to rising cemetery prices, with the remaining 400 to 500 casket spaces at Vancouver’s Mountain View Cemetery priced at $25,000.

Has there ever been a project on time and on budget under the NDP?

It’s not an NDP project, Oracle.

It’s a Liberal project that Krusty lied about while handing out the contracts to her donors.

The lying scumbag billed it as an 8B project but it was going to cost 12B all along.

YVR, seriously, how can you claim that Site C is an NDP project? It is clearly a massive project put in place to generate contracts for Christy’s bankrollers.

It should be abandoned without further ado. Hopefully the NDP will have the balls to do the right thing.

The BCUC is updating the budget now it is under NDP management. The $8 billion estimate was with the BC Liberals running the show. Anything the NDP does will cost minimum double. All non union contractors will be terminated and the union fat cats will be brought in for example.

Halloween trick or treating is a total gong show last night. 80% of the kids showed up at the door aren’t real Canadians kids, and most of them aren’t satisfied with 1 or even 2 candies, and not even a thank you most of the time. No real ingenuity with costumes either. Almost all are store bought lemming costumes of whatever happen to be the popular kids TV shows / movies. Parents? Just stand there with big shopping bags holding kids candies and letting their little brats run wild. Also interesting, virtually no big houses are giving out the candies or putting up decorations. Rather it’s mostly the smaller older houses owned by locals that are still participating. Some renters who camped out on the front porch to give out candies were actually shut down by the landlords living above!!… Read more »

“people were lining up for an hour to get a free small spoonful sample of ice cream at Oakridge. WTF?? Seriously people? 1hr of your time is only worth a tiny spoonful of ice cream?”

They have to frequently train to be in a good shape and ready for action. It is the same local well recognizable big team that camps and lineups for condo presales, Costco sampling, free salt, etc. Also, even a tiny spoonful of ice cream means a lot in a grand schema of things where those with low incomes and in poverty are able to save every penny and invest in multimillion-dollars houses and high-end German cars, it is quite of a process.

That’s 60,000 per year and millions more 10yr visa holders. And hundreds of thousands more foreign students.

Canada to admit 340,000 immigrants a year by 2020 under new three-year plan

http://www.news1130.com/2017/11/01/canada-to-admit-340000-immigrants-a-year-by-2020-under-new-three-year-plan/

Meanwhile, polls consistently indicate the general public does not want increased immigration numbers and actually wants a decrease.
But the government wants to suppress wage growth and increase house prices by admitting even more people.

YRV believes that housing will correct regardless of what government is in power. If this is true the NDP is doing the right thing by his books (aka nothing) because they don’t need to do anything. Oracle continues to beat the immigration drum and Just Me now thinks Oracle makes a lot of sense: if this is true the two of you should both be buying something right away because one thing is for sure: the immigration levels will not suddenly be cut down now or in the next 15 years. No party will touch it. I don’t deny that immigration is a factor, but it doesn’t explain IMO $1.5M townhouses and $1200/sq ft condos and I won’t make decisions based on just immigration, but on overall affordability metrics. If you really believe in unlimited foreign money, that foreign money… Read more »

I think governments can burst the bubble or they can extend bubbles and the Liberals have done everything they can to do so.

Now as you said, the NDP have inherited programs that have done that damage and not yet reversed them.

If they don’t act in the Feb budget then we should excoriate them as they deserve. If they do act I hope you give credit where credit is due.

I’m not a die hard supporter and will judge them appropriately. Will you?

The NDP are not going to do anything FFS. Are you listening to them? They went from massive specific promises prior to the election to “we are studying it”. They have backed away from all those promises. The foreign buyers tax was implemented in August by the Liberals. They didn’t need to wait for a budget to do it. They also put in the legislation it can be adjusted province wide and increased anytime. If the NDP are going to do something why would they wait until Feb when prices are higher? Makes no sense. In Feb you will get more shipping containers.

For the record: I certainly do not agree with all statements (many outlandish) by Oracle. And I most strongly disagree with the tone he uses to make those statements. Having said that, there is certainly some truth in the immigration story: Canada does not bring in destitute peasants, many of the programs try to attract people with non-negligible financial resources. Sadly, in Canada circa 2017, many of those resources find their way in RE investments making life miserable for everyone else. Quality of life is undeniably got worse in Canadian cities over the past 10 years. These elements should factor in policy decisions: it is however apparent that they do not. Canada is become a pressure cooker, where people from all walks of life are starting to realize that governments and institutions (the Bank of Canada, for one) have little… Read more »

I agree with Oracle, you mean well, idealism is a virtue. Careful of becoming deluded. Debt will eventually be paid back in devalued currency. “Answer: $500 million dollars already spent. “

Of course this is a lie. They have not spent $500 million. They have budgeted it in coming years and the rental housing promissed will be 5 years away and is a drop in the bucket. How does 2000 rental housing units in the future compare to immigration over the next few years. Plus the $500 million is paid for by tax payers for housing designed for non tax payers. It is a joke to even mention this as any kind of accomplishment for housing.

Dave
Member

It does almost nothing for solving the housing problem. 2,000 units is about a month of immigration. And then spread that over 5 years. That solves about 2% of the housing problem.

It is a joke to tout that as any type of accomplishment.

I think NDP need time to from an exploratory committee to explore the viability and composition of the committees you mentioned first, probably with a 6 to 12 months timeline to take a report which will take another 6 months for government to review, before setting up those committees with 2 years timeline.
