Some good comments there… Sarah • 6 hours ago I am a retired professional who would not be able to purchase anything more than a condo even if I was still working full time. Even that would put my debt to a rather uncomfortable level, even if I had purchased at the former rock-bottom interest rates. Even two wage earners working to pay the mortgage makes them slaves to their homes. Just because someone owns a home that is worth a million or more doesn’t make them rich anymore. All that “wealth” is locked up in property, even if they own it free and clear (which is highly unlikely), and then your now much higher property taxes have to be paid. “Kennedy Stewart promises to triple the empty home tax in housing announcement”

https://www.thestar.com/vancouver/2018/09/10/kennedy-stewart-promises-to-triple-the-empty-home-tax-in-housing-announcement.html

VANCOUVER—Vancouver mayoral candidate Kennedy Stewart promises to triple the empty home tax and build 25,000 “affordable rental homes” in the first of two housing platform announcements Monday.

Ahead of the Oct. 20 election, the independent candidate has hammered out a plan to prioritize non-profit housing for people with low to medium incomes — households that make $80,000 or less — while encouraging the for-profit housing industry to “provide homes within reach of first-time, local homebuyers.”

It’s not about the amount, that’s all just so he can get the votes. It’s about enforcement. You can tax them the entire value of the property or more and it won’t do squat if you don’t spend money enforcing it.

But yeah, horrible time to be buying as an “investor”.

“Kennedy Stewart promises to triple the empty home tax and build 25,000 “affordable rental homes” ”

Hopefully he can coordinate this with David Eby’s promise to put the foreign buyers tax on presales and the NDP promise to build 130,000 affordable rental units. Is that now 130,000 plus 25,000 affordable units? LOL. Of course then never mention where they will get the money to build $30 billion plus in housing.

The media is really downplaying the fact this killer is a Syrian Refugee; no mention of that in this article:

If what is being reported is accurate, then there should be a public inquiry into the process of refugee background checks by the immigration authorities. Unusual for anyone to arrive in a new country and then proceed to knock off a teenage girl……

Dave

Reply to  xyz

Less uncommon in places like Germany and Sweden apparently. It was verboten for the press to cover it for a long time. It sounds like they are now since so many people see it as a major issue. From what I understand, Canada is mostly getting families, so the people we are getting are more moderate. In Europe, it sounds like young males from all over Africa are using this as an opportunity to sneak in and a lot of those people are trouble. So, I don’t see it as a major issue here for now, but that’s probably luck more than intent. We could just have easily have imported the problems Europe is now facing. And like Europe, you couldn’t discuss your concerns without being labelled as a racist by the left and the media.

You can’t do refugee background checks from countries like Syria. It is basically an interview and hope the person is telling the truth.

But not in the headlines. The media downplays things like this as part of their PC agenda.

If this wasn’t such a story, it might not even be mentioned, but it’s pretty much the first thing people bring up when you talk about it in real life, so, they can’t just bury it.

I think the other posters were spot on. The two articles posted by Patriotz don’t hide the fact that he was a Syrian refugee but they do hide the fact of what is probably on most people’s minds. Is our immigration too much? Is our vetting process broken? Is it time to overhaul the immigration/refugee system? This is what most people are thinking. Not a mention of any of it in the articles only about how the poor Syrian community feel and how it’s unfair on them ( rightfully so). But this isn’t what is on people’s minds after hearing the news. There is a definite agenda to numbing down the info when certain people are involved in major news stories. Been happening for a while now.

” but they do hide the fact of what is probably on most people’s minds.”

You mean your conjecture of what is probably on most people’s minds. Look, these are news stories about the recent arrest of a murder suspect. There’s an intersection with immigration as regards the suspect, but Canada’s immigration system is a vast and complex subject, and it ought not to be examined simply in the context of this one case.

Many muslims in Canada and around the world fully support violence against non-muslims. This belief is baked into their religion. This violence is often even more acceptable when it’s against women dressing “immodestly”. Unless there’s a test for fundamentalist muslim beliefs, you can vet them until you’re blue in the face and not stop this from happening. One of the articles claims it’s not “religiously” motivated. I’ll believe it when I see it. Islam needs a major reformation movement. In aggregate, muslims are a very dogmatic, bigoted, and violent group of people.

Germany’s migrant rape crisis continues unabated. Preliminary statistics show that migrants committed more than a dozen rapes or sexual assaults every day in 2017, a four-fold increase since 2014, the year before Chancellor Angela Merkel allowed into Germany more than a million mostly Muslim male migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The actual number of migrant-related sex crimes in Germany, however, is believed to be far higher than the official number. For instance, the BKA data includes only crimes that have been solved (aufgeklärten Straftaten). On average only around half of all crimes committed in Germany in any given year are solved (Aufklärungsquote), according to police statistics.

BPOM submitted earlier a very valid point re: Head Tax…that the Immigrant investor program is in essence a head tax 2.0 ….yet the foreign locusts gladly pay it. Chinese were willing to pay Head Tax 1.0….and leave their 3rd world shith*le country for a better life. Should we refund their Head Tax and send them back ? Many non Asian immigrants to Canada had to pay their own way and/or be sponsored. Head Tax 1.0 and 2.0 ??? = STFU !!! The Chinese that paid Head Tax would otherwise be subject to Maos’ Communist rule and 60+million Chinese murdered. Now?= nothings changed…….China still Communist, with an elite class we let into Canada…….while the other 99% work as slave labour. Komagata Maru ?…more to the story…given many Revolutions were fomenting globally..Russia had stopped the first Bolshevik revolution in 1905. New York… Read more »

I’ve never liked these apologies from pandering politicians who don’t have a grasp of the realities of society back in the day. We can’t take our current world views and project them back onto society as it was 100 years ago.

Turdeau should maybe offer apologies to victims of ALLIED WAR ATROCITIES…
(and not ass kiss ungrateful 3rd worlders immigrants who think they can have it both ways…aka ” bitch and milk”)

Seems if you are of European descent,….. and not a citizen of the ALLIED side….. anything goes.
Turdeau and Co hypocritical attitude = F*ck You.

Maybe ” GOOGLE” Dresden firebombing of civilians holocaust….Bleiburg Massacre…Katyn massacre….Operation KeelHaul….. why General Patton was murdered…..French women sexually exploited by US soldiers after the war…

Loooooooooooooooooong overdue….

The reason head tax was implemented in the first place back then was because the Chinese were all evading taxes and it was seen as a way to ensure the contributed…and I’m not making this up.

Look harder SIDA…”Bag it and tag it” is RIGHT ON.

Your Auto” Sino apology” programming is tiresome, boring and IMHO traitorous/treasonous.

How come literally EVERY major North American city has a “CHINATOWN” ?

Is it foreign locusts feeling a need to “strength- in- numbers- huddle” in self perceived hostile territory..OR simply establish a base and leach off of the western culture host ?

How come no “round eyes -town” in foreign locust homeland. If they feel western culture is racist..then……logically, go back to their homeland..its a very linear debate and conclusion aka can’t have it both ways.

Seriously SIDA …….W-H-Y are Y-O-U here ?

Sqwaakkk….where Eby,Keg Waiter and Dream WEAVER….?
…….. in a back room ROTFLAO

Civic election just over one month away…OCT. 20.
Then , according to past articles, literally the next day , the PR referendum will be unleashed, right after… as a mail- in , running to end of November. 99.99% of the population has no clue about the details and the ramifications.

NDP always has has been a slimey sleazy party…they leave a litany of broken promises and disillusioned supporters.
Their modus operandi is to make 100% sure their pet agendas get rammed down the citizens throats(ie ALR, ICBC etc)

If and when PR referendum occurs (and IMHO likley succeeds) BC is done..toast…finito…

It’s aimed, he said, at “people who live in British Columbia who don’t pay taxes here; who earn their income somewhere else and use all the social services and buy property with money that’s not earned here, so they’re not paying taxes on it.” The government’s bulletin on the speculation tax centres on “satellite families,” in which the family breadwinner makes money offshore but uses that wealth to buy B.C. properties using the name of a wife, child or lawyer who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Few recognize the speculation tax on B.C. residents is basically offset for those who pay income taxes in B.C. The Finance Ministry maintains the speculation tax will apply to fewer than one per… Read more »
