Trudeau sells housing plan in visit to hot real estate market in B.C.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2019/03/25/trudeau-sells-housing-plan-in-visit-to-hot-real-estate-market-in-b-c/

“We just can’t treat the symptoms of sky-high housing prices,” Trudeau added. “We have to deal with the causes as well. When there aren’t enough properties on the market, more people are competing for the same places, which forces the costs up for buyers and renters.”

I wonder if Turd considers speculative demand to be part of the problem? So maybe curbing that speculation might be a good idea?

According to the 2016 SFS, debt-to-income ratios of families living in Victoria (240%), Vancouver (230%) and Toronto (210%) significantly exceeded the national average of 165%. Should we prosecute the people in power now too? Casino revenue is forecast in the NDP budget to increase each of the next 3 years to record levels. Stop it? They have expanded it. How else could casino revenue be budgeted to increase in each of the next 3 years under the NDPs own budget? Did the NDP find some magic way to stop the money laundering while bringing in even more legitimate funds to replace it and even increase it? Not possible. It means more money laundering under the NDP. There is no other possible source of the additional cash in casinos.

You are comparing deJong’s investment properties only against Selina’s personal residence plus her second property. For a proper comparison you have to include deJong’s personal residence as well, which happens to be a farm in Abbotsford. Google Mike de Jong family farm for photos, he likes to show it off.

Also how do you know Selena owns two single family houses? Her MLA disclosure contains no addresses.

A $75-billion snapshot of foreign-owned Vancouver real estate
https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/dan-fumano-a-75-billion-snapshot-of-foreign-owned-vancouver-real-estate

As the picture of foreign property ownership in Vancouver comes into clearer focus, new analysis shows non-residents of Canada own a much bigger proportion of local housing than previous official reports, with at least $75-billion worth of Vancouver-area residential real estate tied to offshore owners…

@ Joe Money

In some areas it’s a lot higher than 10%…
In a city where prices have been rising due to low interest rates etc over the past few years, obviously any extra demand from anywhere piled on top of existing demand has assisted in pushing prices higher in some areas. As people sell in those areas and move into other cheaper areas, there is a spillover effect into the entire region. Economics 101…read up on it.
Many countries don’t allow foreigners to own property or are restricted in different ways to preserve stock for locals.

Shut It Down Already (original)

In some areas it’s more than 10. In some property classes it’s more than 10. But in as many it’s less, and on average it is 10.

Irrelevant.

It’s the 10% at the high end that ripples out to all segments of the market.

Had chinese been banned from buying we never would have seen prices reach even half of what they did.

Shut It Down Already (original)
Guest
Shut It Down Already (original)

Right, when all those house-horny locals are tripping over themselves to “win” a bidding war that they cannot possibly afford to win it’s totally the faulty of some other person in a different neighbourhood or different city who bought a far more expensive house.

If only that tiny proportion of luxury 7 bedroom houses were back on the market then the housing crisis would be solved.

Idiot. In fact you’re almost as much of an idiot as the people who voluntarily overpaid and now face a lifetime of mortgage payments they can only pay by sacrificing everything else about their financial future. Except you never bought because you thought the market was bubbly when a house cost $450K. LOL.

Doomcouver
Guest
Doomcouver

Kind of just confirms what many people already thought. Foreign money dominates at the ultra high end of the market, and comprises a smaller proportion as you move down the property ladder. This manifests as a higher overall share in terms of monetary value, though I feel they comprise a much smaller share on a % of total units basis. Most of the affordability crisis can still be blamed on domestic FOMO’s. Not foreign criminals buying 10 million dollar condos.
