Saturday free-for-all! Money laundering edition.

It’s been our position for years that money laundering isn’t a primary driver of the Vancouver real estate market, but we’re now willing to admit it may be a factor.

So, does anyone have any good money laundering tips? The government doesn’t seem to mind and it looks like a good way to fund retirement.

As always post your news links, thoughts and anecdotes in the comments below and have an excellent weekend!

The disappearance of a combined $6.1 billion from two Chinese companies has dumbfounded investors and forced regulators to take action
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-stocks-regulation-analysis/chinese-firms-missing-6-billion-tests-regulators-resolve-idUSKCN1SN0OT

>>> either the rats stole the money and fled through the back door (meaning the house of cars will come tumbling down) OR company financials were simply cooked suggesting these so called successes (and perhaps the market as a whole) were just smoke and mirrors acts, ponzi schemes or whatever other name you can come up with…

Judi Tyabji has some insights about the money laundering situation. Scroll to around the 31 minute mark. (Video from one year ago)

You can tell after 10 sec by her vocabulary and gesticulation what kind of MF shill-scumbag she is. Reminds me of those moral pundits who offstage run whorehouses and deal drugs because money is good and “will support” investments in the community (e.g. schools, hospitals, parks, etc.).

Regardless,….. what a joke.
Her affair with Wilson made BC butt of jokes..now she comes out swinging with some rant that would put SIDA to shame.

Actually, BC and Canada were just fine till we let United Nations sourced hordes of foreign locusts in..if you don’t like it well….4Q.

What a sick tirade, that’s the kind of garbage you hear from random boomers calling in to CKNW.

Tyabji came across as an unhinged whackjob whose real estate holdings were being threatened by Eby’s attempts to clean up the criminal shit from china that has poisoned our province.

I wonder if she posts here as SIDA.

Tyabji’s disdain in this clip for linking money laundering to the fentanyl problem is particularly rank, considering her son wound up pleading guilty to importing about $400,000 worth of fentanyl.

The sentence? 8 months of house arrest, 8 months of curfew, and 5 months of probation. Basically, he was grounded.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/kasimir-tyabji-sandana-pleads-guilty-attempted-possession-of-fentanyl-1.4641664

“Devlin said he is now ashamed of the embarrassment he’s caused himself and his family.”

Nothing about being ashamed of importing fentanyl?

Confused? Allow me to explain.

The first number is new real estate listings recorded today by the board.

The second number is how many existing listings increased or decreased their asking price.

The third number is how many listings were recorded as sold today.

The fourth number is the total number of listings on the market in the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver at this moment. This one is important because it’s been going up every day this year.

GT jumping all over the Bloomberg report saying the money laundering report figures may not be accurate. But no comment the other day when the initial government report came out saying $7.4 Billion in laundered cash last year in BC.
Talk about confirmation bias from that guy.

eastender

Regardless of what gt said (I stopped wasting my time reading that clown many years ago), this Bloomberg article was misunderstood by many, and I agree that its “smoking gun” title was a bit misleading. The message the author is trying to convey is: – those billion numbers are not facts, they are estimates and they are neither precise nor accurate, there is no good methodology to get a reliable estimate in this case so far; – public inquiry is more of a political thing, any law changes that may help BC become more affordable do not depend on this inquiry; – it is dangerous to make money laundering the only scapegoat for unaffordable housing prices: bad immigration, taxation and mortgage policies are bigger factors. Why do I think so? Because I have discussed this article with the author yesterday.… Read more »

“The report does not identify a single laundered dollar or an account with laundered money or even a single purchase of property using ill-gotten wealth. The report primarily relied on previous international estimates that stated that roughly two to five per cent of global GDP comprised laundered money.”

“The report identified some unusual suspects for inflows of laundered money to Canada. The bulk of the estimated inflows to Canada originated in the U.S. followed by Northern Europe and Western Europe respectively. “

“Vancouver’s dirty money figures: The smoking gun that wasn’t”, Vancouver Sun
https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/vancouvers-dirty-money-figures-the-smoking-gun-that-wasnt

“A closer reading of the two studies the government used to support its announcements show there’s little hard evidence of actual money laundering, and even then, the amounts could be much smaller. And while one report said much of the suspect money is coming from China, the other pointed to the U.S.”

“The study gauged that $7.4 billion was laundered through B.C. last year. By far the biggest source of dirty cash into Canada was the U.S. at $4.9 billion, six times more than from East Asia, including China. “

Here’s the scenario that should worry people that care about the housing crisis.

Let’s presume dirty money has been a big part of this market and let’s say bankers, developers, realtors and marketers have some dirt on them. Are they going to continue building and doing business in a jurisdiction that is going after them and the way they make money? Or are they more likely to sit and wait it out? Obviously the latter. Markets hate uncertainty.

Is it possible that construction slows down significantly for the next few years because of the inquiry and is it possible that demand outstrips supply, thus keeping the price of housing unreasonably high?

Dyugle

Is it possible for layoffs to cause people to liquidate under water assets and move away from the most expensive city catering demand while driving up supply?

If the crooks decide to sit things out, that creates space for more honest bankers, developers, realtors and marketers to flourish. Maybe that’s not what you want to see, but I think you’re in the minority.

Dave

I’m fine with it. Why else would I have been calling it out here? I question the efficacy of an inquiry and I’m not convinced this is the best option.

I’m also not convinced the public won’t turn on the NDP for hurting the economy. I know you somehow think that reflects on me, but it’s simply a prediction based on human behaviour.

Selective Memory

Selective Memory

You say you’re “fine with it” but it’s kind of unconvincing when you’re continually insinuating we’d be better off getting back to business-as-usual in the money laundry.

Will the public turn on the NDP? They always do. In the mean time, hopefully the inquiry will roast enough Liberal pigs so they think twice about pulling the same crap next time they get their snouts in the trough.

Dave
Member
I don’t think you understand my position. I think all the measures taken by the NDP are significant and will have a significant effect on the market. I believe that it’s inevitable the economy will slow down because of these actions. Real estate is the biggest industry, so it’s going to effect the whole economy. While the public supports generally support the concept of addressing the housing crisis, they will on the other hand be upset the economy isn’t strong. Nor will the public be happy when they get their Assessments in January 2020. So I’m not convinced the NDP will ultimately follow through on it all, because the public won’t have the patience for it. I think I do understand your position. Like many conservatives, you take an awareness of your own moral weakness and project it onto everyone around you, labelling it ‘human nature’. It’s a cynical world-view that also happens to be very convenient — it gives license to behave badly, because after all, everyone else is just as wicked, if only they had the courage to admit it to themselves. You’d have to be a sucker to behave any better when you’re surrounded by monsters, right? But pointing out that everyone is flawed hardly qualifies as great insight. We don’t exist in a binary state of good or evil, but on a spectrum of better and worse. How much you’re willing to compromise your principles is crucial. People who are untroubled by principle have their greatest competitive advantage when surrounded by those… Read more »

a 40, 50, 60% haircut on RE prices will effectively put Cda into a depression, no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. layoffs and business closures will be widespread. millions will have their retirement nesteggs wiped out completely. recovering from this will be next to impossible over the short to medium term for many who fall into this camp. everyone will be sent a bill for their portion of the cleanup whether they had a hand in it or not.
