CRA combating underground economy with Home Depot purchase records

What a dumb idea. Does CRA believe those who do cash home improvement deals pay for their supplies by credit card? Makes no sense. If you accept all cash you pay for supplies in cash which home depot would not have a record of who paid it. Those who pay for the supplies by credit card can use that as an expense to offset claimed income plus they get a GST credit. No reason to hide it. Like there is not enough low hanging fruit for those evading taxes. Just randomly audit any home owner with a house worth over $5 million which was bought in the last 5 years.
This is to appease the dumb locals.
Recession odds in Canada’s crude, condo and cannabis economy
If a recession does come, it “could actually be a lot more severe than people think,” according to David Wolf, part of the asset allocation team at Fidelity Investments Canada.
“The reason for that is it’s most likely to come from abroad,” Wolf said, adding that it could result in Canada’s first credit-cycle retrenchment since the early 1990s.
Wolf said he’s underweight the Canadian dollar and expects to see a “pretty significant depreciation in the currency” over the medium to long term.
“Canada actually stands out for us as being one of the more vulnerable economies despite what looks like a pretty good environment right now,” Wolf said.

Sounds like good news to me too, just don’t ask how much money has been spent prosecuting this case so far, let alone the final tally after all the appeals have been exhausted. Draconian though it might be, the Chinese criminal justice system has some advantages over ours.
Well, that rule of law is there to protect innocent people. Just because it makes it less efficient to prosecute criminals doesn’t mean we should strip the protections is offers. I think it’s money well spent if we can send the message to money launderers that Vancouver isn’t “open for business” anymore.

Last year at this time, my car broke down in Clearwater, BC, not just once but a couple of times. I put the Safety vest on and walked to where I had to go,.. just in time for the big raze that was percolating and coming to a boil in Grande Prairie, across the border. People on tv were wearing yellow vests to signify their protests, and I’m walking around town attempting to get my van up and going. So it was bizarre. Here they are at the YellowHead roundabout yellowvesting. Here I am getting an RCMP klaxon blown at me as I walk to city hall.

Burnaby’s new tax on landlords is class warfare that will backfire
“I currently earn significantly less than a one-per-cent rate of return (before tax) on my rental house in South Burnaby and this new $570 annual fee will further decrease my return. At some point, it fails to make any economic sense to continue.”
too bad and so sad. I get a kick out of these speculator landlords who cry about having to pay more for city services for their “investment” properties. All the while creating artificial demand for properties and driving up the prices for everybody.
The government on one hand is providing subsidies to multi family rental buildings by reducing development levies but with the other hand they are increasing taxes on individual landlords through schemes like this and through higher property taxes (no home owners grant). Sucking and blowing. Do they want more rentals or not? We now have the lowest vacancy rates in the country coupled with the highest rents which are increasing at triple inflation. What a disaster.
This is the City of Burnaby not the provincial government.

Seems like nobody told this Burnaby landlord that, in this century’s market, nobody makes money from renting out a home… they make money solely from the appreciation of the home price.

Yeah landlords haven’t been able to get a decent rental yield since the ’90s. They’ll have to eat the cost of this tax just like they eat the cost of everything else. They’ll do it because they’re expecting a windfall in capital appreciation every year. It’s not sustainable and these amateur landlords will dump their inventory on the market en-masse when the common narrative shifts to a bear market.
HK police needs to stop the brutality against freedom protesters…even God has deemed them unworthy and beyond saving. Continue in their brutality and God will slowly exact his vengeance one by one until they are all purged from HK.
