There are some trolls and crapflooders on this board. For the most part downvoting them works and I know there is resistance to banning people here, but I think that's the only way to send a message. Can we have a poll and at least vote to IP ban the worst?

Here's who I think should be considered based on a track record of offtopic one-note trolling:

Li Kai shing
Extremely wealthy bla bla
Ravishing Rick

I think 'jokey' posts are fine, but they shouldnt fill the whole comment list.

Here is an interesting quote from Doris Dungey AKA Tanta in a post a few years ago:

Dear reporters, we quote your stuff periodically, giving credit both to the reporter and the publication, under fair use terms. We have no objection to your returning the favor. If you have an editor who will not allow that, and you think that the problem can be solved by getting one of us to drop our online personas, give you our real names, and say the same thing to you over the phone, so that you can get your editor to accept it as something other than just blogging, which everybody knows is untrustworthy ranting by anonymous nuts, you are making a faulty assumption about the relationship among us, our birthdays, and yesterday. Neither CR nor Tanta wishes to play into a set of assumptions that render what we say on the blog as unworthy of coverage by the Big Media, but what we might say on the phone to Intrepid Reporter as good dirt and straight skinny.

Welcome to a world where ideas and arguments have no faces.

A problem, as I see it, is this blog has some great stuff in the comments but almost all the pieces are, for the most part, citations of MSM articles. There have been a few wonderful exceptions of course. If opinions are sought, an intrepid reporter is more than able to join the conversation in the comments and elicit opinions from some pretty smart posters. Whether he/she chooses to use these quotes or not is their prerogative but why do ideas need a talking head or a voice?

What a reporter is generally looking for is an individual who represents a point of view. They don't like pseudonyms or anonymity. If you are interested in representing VCI to the media, but wish to remain anonymous like Dave here's what I suggest: come up with a pseudonym that sounds like a real name and give yourself a title, ie:

David Sharade
Sentiment Analyst

We don't currently have any media requests, but if you're interested in responding to future ones post your 'media name' and the title you want here and we may send on media requests to your registered account email. Here are a few possible titles for your fake resume:

• Media Liaison
• Sentiment Analyst
• Economic Researcher
• Life Coach

You may not be an expert, but you can play one in the media.

"How does a talking head work for anything? "

Talking heads are either scripted to have opinions on behalf of the organization they represent or are free spirits. VCI is a mix of the two so all you would get is a mixed opinion. Having two heads is probably the only way to do it.

What would be ideal is if Dave and Patriotz shared this position. If the Tyee wants a quote it goes to Dave and if the Province wants a quote it goes to Patriotz. <img src="http://vancouvercondo.info/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

Hello all,

Every so often we get requests to comment on news stories or respond to interview questions. Most reporters don't really want to hear about how a site is 'community run', what they really want is a talking head to represent a group of people.

So who wants to be the VCI media liaison? The only requirements are that you can speak and write with a modicum of sense, we would forward any interview requests or questions to you.

The only compensation for this position is the potential for occasional media appearances.

If you're interested or want to encourage another poster to consider, please post your ideas here.

While it's a fine line, discussing things like tax and immigration policy do relate to Vancouver condos, at least indirectly. I always try to remember why people visit this site, and I assume it's to read and inform themselves about Vancouver condos. It's when the debates lack that context that things go awash.

Take a stance akin to Mark Carney's on inflation: lax policies with self-policing is best, with the occasional bark from the moderator.

I think making the comments disappear after -10 would get rid of a lot of the trolls. Trolls like to be heard, and this would stifle their voice.

I notice many of the "bulls" post non-sense figures, then many of the "bears" spend 20 posts correcting them. If the non-sense disappeared, maybe others wouldn't be so inclined to respond to correct it.

Hey guys, I notice that there's been some unhappiness with the number of off-topic rants in the blog comments. This has always been a fairly open blog in terms of the commentary that is allowed but I think the comment ranking system generally helps to keep things on track. We can't please everyone, and each tweak we make to the ranking system usually gets the whole range of feedback from positive to negative. The open nature of anonymous comments on the blog leads to more volume and more chaos - the forums tend to be more focused because they require a user account.

Can't promise any immediate changes, but here's a chance for you registered users to speak your mind on the best course of action regarding blog comments.

Love the site, thanks for hosting it. I really like the way the site looks but I would still probably use the lite version if it was available. I also like the voting trolls off idea, although I wouldn't object to you just banning the obvious ones on your own.

One suggestion, when the paged comments roll over could the first page with the newest comments be full and the last page get the leftover comment? It's kind of annoying when there is only one comment on the first page.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, reaction to disappearing comments is about half and half. One reason not to do it is that people inevitably respond to the trolls before their comment is voted down, so you end up with a reply that makes no sense without context.

Signal to noise ratio was pretty bad last week though, if that keeps up what we might do is have a 'vote a troll off the island' poll in the forums at some point, where registered users can vote for which troll to IP ban. That won't help site performance though.

Thanks for the feedback, it's always appreciated.

First of all, love the site Pope - thanks. Would also like voted-down comments to vanish like they used to. I seem to recall that being the case at one point, but the low-rated comments seem to remain now. I also seem to recall some discussion about it but don't recall the conclusion of it. I think disappearing comments might reduce the number/volume of trolls and their craft. Might also reduce the amount of thread hijacking. :twocents:

A few days back Domus pointed out that this site is slow when loading all comments on one page, sometimes failing to complete loading. XXX echoed the same concern saying that ever since adding the rollercoaster this site has been slower. The coaster is hosted off YouTube, so it's not adding any extra load to the site, but the performance issue is related.

The problem is two-fold:

1: Traffic keeps growing - the coaster is driving more people to the site, we steadily get more than 3500 visits a day and many people visit multiple times which puts a greater load on the server.

2: We've added a lot of extras to the site, like the comment voting and formatting system as well as the forums. It's a fairly heavy load for a hobbyist blog, but these are things that tend to make this site both interesting and useful. If we shut down the comment voting and 'foreclosure' etc comment formatting the page loads would likely get a fair bit faster.

No one has had much time to tweak the technical aspects of this site recently, but time permitting the plan is to add a barebones comment page for registered viewers so there is an option to load up a lite version of the comment page without any extra formatting. Hopefully this option for the regulars, plus some additional site optimization will solve this problem.

Don't give up on us yet, and feel free to chime in with your own feedback below.
