It's just like how on this very website, there were examples of some Vancouver condo-towns that were selling for a $100,000 difference (same address, different unit)... and why was that? Well, the person with the cheaper price had bought in 2003/04, whereas the person with the higher price had bought in 2007/08. So, although the second person could see that their's wasn't going to be the one that sold... they still had it at that higher price.
